Finding Your Unique Voice as a Wellness Instructor

When you finish your teacher training, whether it’s yoga, Pilates, or any kind of mindful movement, it’s totally normal to feel like your brain is scrambled eggs.

You’ve been absorbing so much information, probably in a short amount of time, and then suddenly you’re ‘ready’ to step into a room and lead a class.
It can feel like everything you just learned went in one ear and out the other.

Then you go on social media and see other teachers doing their thing. They seem confident, clear, polished, and this can be a little intimidating.
Your inner critic might kick in and you start thinking:
“Should I be more like that?”
“Am I even ready to teach?”
“Everyone else seems to have it all figured out…”

It’s easy to get caught in comparison, but those teachers that you see online didn’t start out with clarity and confidence. They learnt it over time through showing up, teaching, making mistakes, and figuring out what feels real to them.

Try everything before you choose your path…

If you’re not sure what your style is yet, that’s completely fine.
You probably won’t figure it out by overthinking. You figure it out by getting out there and trying things.

Go to different classes, try different styles of yoga/Pilates/movement. And not just in your local area, get outside your bubble and visit other studios in different towns, states, or even countries.
Every place has its own vibe, and people want different things in different areas.

When you find something that interests you or resonates with you, explore it more.
Go to more classes, take a workshop, read books, maybe even ask a teacher you vibe with if you can observe or assist them.
If it still resonates with you after going deeper, it might be your thing. That could be where you start to find your voice.

Also – most teachers love to teach… so don’t be afraid to ask teachers for advice, feedback or even mentorship if they have the capacity.

Teach to learn…

You don’t have to feel “ready” to teach. You just have to start.

You will learn the most by teaching.
Even if you don’t feel confident yet, the more you show up, the more you’ll start to find your rhythm. You’ll figure out what cues feel natural, what language feels right in your body, and how you want to hold space for people.

If teaching scares you right now, start small. Offer donation-based classes to take the pressure off. Teach a friend or a small group. The goal isn’t to be perfect, it’s just to practice.

Don’t try to be everything to everyone…

Once you start getting clearer on what feels aligned, stick with it. Let that be your anchor. Teach what you love, what makes you feel alive, and teach the type of class that you’d want to attend yourself.

Trying to please everyone waters down your teaching. It makes it harder for people to connect with you. You want to be clear on what you offer, even if it means some people don’t like your classes - that’s actually a good sign because you can’t be everything to everyone.

If you’re true to yourself, the people who resonate with you will feel that. They’ll keep coming back. They’ll tell their friends. They’ll become your people and your community - the ones who support and grow with you.

Your teaching will probably change over time..

Don’t feel like you have to choose a style or niche and lock it in forever. As you evolve, so will your teaching. Your interests will shift, your voice might change, ynd your community will evolve with it.

Just keep coming back to what feels real for you.

Be curious and honest and teach from lived experience.
Keep reminding yourself that you’re not supposed to have it all figured out. That’s not the point. The point is to teach from your heart, keep learning, always be a student, and let your voice grow with you.

  • What parts of teaching light me up? What parts drain me?

  • What do I want people to feel after they leave my class?

  • Where am I holding back or trying to fit into a mould?

  • What would my dream class look like if there were no limitations and no boundaries?
